Candidates in both parties are refusing to stand on a stage together. Then they spend eleven billion dollars telling you what the other one would have said.

## NOBODY WANTS THE MICROPHONE THEY CAN'T EDIT

Neither of Texas's two big statewide races has a debate on the calendar. Not the Senate race. Not the governor's race.

The ads run every eleven minutes.

That is the largest political advertising market in American history, and it is being spent to describe conversations that are not going to happen.

Your Name Was Missing.](https://clkgrid.com/69a2e2e8a0ec58a3b8924fb4?email=not%5Ftracked&domain=327TBEG&type=SA&product=SSGF618&ref=bareeconomy.ghost.io) [(AD)](https://clkgrid.com/69a2e2e8a0ec58a3b8924fb4?email=not%5Ftracked&domain=327TBEG&type=SA&product=SSGF618&ref=bareeconomy.ghost.io)

**Have You Added Your Name to Trump’s Letter?**

We checked the list twice.

[**Your name wasn’t there.**](https://clkgrid.com/69a2e2e8a0ec58a3b8924fb4?email=not%5Ftracked&domain=327TBEG&type=SA&product=SSGF618&ref=bareeconomy.ghost.io)

A personal letter is being prepared for America’s **45th and 47th President**, signed by Americans who believe the next “golden era” should protect the people who spent decades building their retirement.

The message is simple:

***Mr. President,***

*Americans are tired of inflation, endless government debt, and Wall Street deciding what a lifetime of savings will be worth.*

*Put America’s savers first. Protect the dollar. And keep real, tangible assets like gold at the center of America’s financial future.*

This isn’t another Washington petition that disappears into a filing cabinet.

**It’s a public roll call.**

A line in the sand from Americans who refuse to let inflation quietly erase everything they worked for.

Trump stood up and promised America a new golden era.

**Now it’s your turn to be counted.**

## THE BREAKDOWN: BOTH PARTIES ARE DOING THIS

**1\. In Texas, it is the Republicans declining.**

Talarico has accepted four televised Senate debate invitations. Paxton says he will debate but has not committed to any of them. Talarico challenged him to meet on Fox News, which he called "Ken Paxton's safe space," and Fox agreed to host if both show. Talarico accepted. Paxton has not.

Governor Abbott, who debated Beto O'Rourke in 2022, has not agreed to face Gina Hinojosa, and his campaign has not said why.

**2\. In Ohio, Arizona and Florida, it is the Democrats declining.**

This is the part the Texas-centred coverage leaves out. Of the five closely watched governor's races with no debate scheduled, Texas is the one where the Republican is refusing. In Ohio, Arizona and Florida, the Democratic nominees are.

Ohio's Amy Acton turned down Vivek Ramaswamy, her campaign saying she does not intend to give him a platform. In Nevada, Democrat Aaron Ford has made Joe Lombardo's reluctance a campaign issue, having declined to debate a credible challenger in his own primary.

Add the Ohio Senate race, where Jon Husted and Sherrod Brown are neck and neck and no debate ever got scheduled, plus open seats in North Carolina and Minnesota. In Virginia, Mark Warner cited a busy Senate schedule.

**3\. Four years ago this was rare. Now it is half the map.**

By Axios's count, five of the ten most closely watched governor's races have no agreed debate. In the same ten races four years ago, the number was two.

**4\. The stated reason is audience. The real reason is risk.**

Brett O'Donnell, a Republican debate-prep consultant, points at a public trained on fifteen seconds and asks how many will sit through an hour.

He is right about the audience and it is not the whole answer. A debate produces sixty minutes of footage the campaign does not control, in an era when one bad clip gets cut, scored and bought into every feed in the state by the opposing super PAC within a day.

## THE FRICTION: THIS IS A CAPITAL ALLOCATION DECISION

Look at it the way a campaign manager does, because that is what it is.

When reach is expensive and scarce, free airtime is worth the risk of standing next to someone who can contradict you. When a super PAC can book $115 million in a single month in one state, as a new group did for Paxton, free airtime stops being worth anything at all.

The honest counterpoint deserves room. Debate audiences really have collapsed, campaigns are not public service institutions, and a candidate who declines a format is not committing a crime. Voters have more direct access to candidates now than at any point in history, through podcasts, livestreams and feeds where no moderator intervenes.

But every one of those alternatives is a venue the candidate chooses. The debate is the only format where someone who wants the same job gets to respond in real time, and it is the only one a voter gets without being targeted and paid for.

## THE MACRO EXTRACTION

Follow where the eleven billion lands, because that is a real industry with real beneficiaries. Broadcast takes roughly $5.6 billion of it, connected television about $2.7 billion, digital $1.6 billion. Local station groups in swing states book the best quarter of their four-year cycle, and streaming inventory in contested markets is tight enough to move pricing for ordinary advertisers.

The structural read is the one worth keeping. A product that used to be provided free is being withdrawn, and the substitute is a paid version controlled by the seller. That is the same shape as a public park leased for a fraction of its value, and the same shape as a public service moved behind a vendor's chatbot.

For your own purposes the practical move is small and useful. When a candidate will not debate, the thing to notice is not the dodge but what it predicts: a campaign built entirely on paid message is a campaign that intends to govern without unscripted contact, and that habit does not end on November 3.

Tomorrow evening in this city, candidates for five council districts will stand in a room at the Austin Energy building and answer questions from neighbours. No consultants, no ad buy, no production. The further down the ballot you go, the more the old thing survives, which tells you it was never the format that stopped working.

Keep your capital guarded, hold your ground, and stay sharp out there.

— Brook
